Changing your default currency

How the default currency works, when it’s locked, and how to change it.

Changing your default currency

Your default currency drives every total on the dashboard. New accounts inherit it, budgets default to it, and Finthy converts everything to it for the net-worth view.

Change it from Settings

  1. Go to Settings → Preferences.

  2. Open the Default currency dropdown.

  3. Pick a new currency from the list.

  4. Save your changes.

Why is it locked?

On the free plan, the default currency is fixed to the one you picked at signup. The dropdown shows the message “Currency is locked to your default.”

When you try to change it on a free account, an Upgrade dialog appears explaining what unlocks with a paid plan. (We used to redirect you to the upgrade page — now you can decide right where you are.)

What changes when you switch

  • Dashboard totals — converted into the new currency using the latest FX rate.

  • New accounts and budgets — default to the new currency, but you can pick any currency per account on a paid plan.

  • Existing accounts — keep their own currency. Switching the default only affects display totals, not the underlying data.
